Tonnette’s poems, collected and printed onto paper that I made by hand from local mullen with yucca (for the central pages, with the backsides overlayed into the background behind the scans to show the imbedding), cotton pulp and knotweed (for the title page that I also hand pressed the title into), and seaweed (the final page). I lasercut leather and attached clasps to form sheaths to hold the pages. In this process, I have been able to understand this artist and her longstanding poetic practice more concisely, as well as identify the natural overlaps in the themes present in our work. If I tend to it long enough, something will grow. Something. This piece began with awe and appreciation of Yumiko Izu‘s Secret Garden NUANCE series, especially #4. The composition of the calla lillies (my favorite flower), the intimacy of the gesture between them spoke directly to me. The spaces they reveal are where the traces begin. Repetition, experimentation, erasure, precision, experience. I am left with shapes and colors; fog, maybe smoke, rushes in to fill them. Every detail dulls with a softness that can only come with time and consideration. These elements are used to encapsulate the mystique and amorphous nature of the spirit as well as the primordial concepts of love and war; attraction and repulsion.
